 Who I Won’t Work For
When you've been in the construction business as long as I have, you've seen and heard a lot of things from clients. From experience, I've learned there are some clients I will never work for because we just don't see eye to eye on some very basic things. Whoa - now that's a statement! You're probably thinking, "Hey Michael, don't you want more business?"
You’re also probably wondering what kind of guy puts this in his website! One who cares about excellence and doing the job the right way every time for his clients! And as if this weren't "bad" enough, all my craftsmen and trusted professionals are just like me!!!
To give you an idea of what I mean by "clients I will never work for", here are some descriptions - it sounds something like this...
“I don’t care how you get it done as long as it’s cheap.”
Cheap is never the best answer. My team and I will work like crazy to do the best work for a price that fits your budget – but it will never be cheaply done, made or bought!
“Well my husband always used to do it this way and it didn’t cost him that much.”
When your husband did this in 1980 the cost of lumber was about 150% cheaper and I was a whole lot cuter. I will never charge you more for materials than necessary – remember I charge by the job not time and materials so you will always get the best deal from me.
“Yeah, I probably need to clear out all that rusted equipment in the back – but can’t you work around it?”
If you don’t care about your property, I’m not the person for you. The Neighborhood GuyTM craftsmen and professionals take pride in your home and the work we do in it.
But so you don’t think I’m a hard hearted guy, if you ask us to find someone to get all that rusty equipment out of the way because you just haven’t had time to get it cleared out, we’ll work with you to make your home look like new.
“Well you know you can install a new door in a much better way than that. And you know you don’t have to use that type of caulking on the tub. I’ve never heard of it being done that way, I’ve always done it this way, etc . . .”
If you know how to do it better than I do – we have two choices – you need to become a contractor and I need to work for you or you need to do the work yourself.
Please understand – I want you to ask me questions and if you’ve been around the block with renovation or new construction, I appreciate your experience and am willing to discuss options with you. But if you think you have all the answers, then there’s really no need for me or my team.
“I need a bedroom added on. We’re expecting family for the summer at the beginning of July. I know it’s the middle of June but I just know you can get a room up and running in two weeks.”
This person has just taken the “reason” out of reasonable expectations. The Neighborhood GuyTM craftsman and professionals are good – really good – but we are not superhuman and we do have lives. If we believe we can’t get a job done within the time frame you need it, we’ll tell you and give you other options. But please don’t ask us to do something that no one could possibly do in such a short amount of time with any standard of excellence.
